SmartMove FAQs

How do I know if I have been accepted onto SmartMove?
First you must have an assessment with a SmartMove worker. Once we have gone through the process and, usually after obtaining references, we will contact you to let you know the outcome.

What if I haven’t been accepted?
We will contact you, usually by letter. We will tell you the reasons why you have not been accepted, and wherever possible, give you advice on other courses of action.

I’ve just had my SmartMove assessment. What will my SmartMove worker be doing next?
Contacting your referees and going through your assessment to decide if the scheme is appropriate for you.

Why is it taking so long?
Most delays occur because we are waiting for your references to come back. Other delays happen because you have not yet contacted us with the names and contact details of your referees.

Once I have been accepted can I look for somewhere to rent?
Yes. SmartMove does not have accommodation of its own. But before you look for somewhere to rent you must attend a one-to-one where we will discuss the scheme in more detail; give you hints and tips on sourcing accommodation; explain about affordability and talk through the process of explaining the SmartMove scheme to prospective landlords.

What if I find a place to rent sooner than expected?
Contact SmartMove as soon as possible. Do not sign a tenancy agreement or move in until you have spoken to us. If you do, we may not be able to help.

I’ve already found somewhere to live, can I move in first and then make an application to SmartMove?
No.

What happens if I can get the money together for a deposit?

Do I need rent in advance?
Probably. You should begin to look into ways of getting this together before you look for property. Exeter SmartMove cannot help with rent in advance.

Why can’t I just move into SmartMove accommodation?
SmartMove does not have its own accommodation. Occasionally, however we do hear of vacancies and try to match the right person to the right vacancy in a fair a way as possible. Sometimes vacancies arise quickly so you must be prepared to attend a viewing at short notice. Please remember it is always the landlord’s decision as to who he accepts as a tenant.

It’s all very complicated! I don’t understand any of this. Can you help?
We hope so. Please contact us at any stage of there is anything you do not understand.
